Lumbar plexus:

The lumbar plexus is nothing but a network of nerve fibers. This supplies the skin and muscles of the lower limb and it is located in the lumbar region, within the psoas major muscle, and anterior to the transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae.

The lumbar plexus - anterior rami of L1 to L4 and also includes the nerves from the T12.

Nerves included in lumbar plexus are,
Pneumonic - I (twice) get laid on Fridays.

• Ilio-hypogastric
• Ilioinguinal
• Genitofemoral
• Lateral femoral cutaneous
• Obturator
• Femoral

Roots of lumbar plexus:
Pneumonic:
2 nerves from 1 root
2 from 2 roots
2 from 3 roots

2 nerves from one root:
Ilio-hypogastric(superior) and ilioinguinal(inferior) from one root, L1.

2 nerves from 2 successive pair of roots:
Genitofemoral nerve comes from the anterior rami of L1 and L2
Lateral femoral cutaneous comes from the anterior rami of L2 and L3.

2 from 3:
Obturator and femoral nerve come from the anterior rami of L2, L3, and L4. These nerves are the principal nerves of the lumbar plexus.
Obturator nerve – motor innervation to the muscles of the medial compartment of the thigh
The femoral nerve provides the motor innervation to the muscles of the anterior compartment of the thigh.
The sciatic nerve from the sacral plexus provides the motor innervation to the muscles of the posterior compartment of thigh.

From 12th thoracic – subcostal nerve. This nerve contributes to the lumbar plexus.
Accessory obturator nerve – from L3 and L4 and it's not always present.
Two branches from the femoral nerve - Muscular branches to the psoas muscle and the iliacus muscle.
